Subject: Hermit Thrush Status Question
Bob/Todd
I got two reports of Hermit Thrush on the May (13) count this year in Charles. I also received three boat-tailed Grackles (two separate reports), and one report of Black-capped Chickadee. The later two are easy to discount, since they could be Brown-headed Cowbird and Carolina Chickadee which are on the next line. ATundra Swan was documented - an injured bird at Pomonkey Creek. The Hermit Thrush are a little more of a concern, and I have been unable to get any documentation from the observer. Gwen had one on May 7 in Nanjemoy, which I thought was pretty late.
From your experiene, what is the historical occurence of Hermit Thrush observed during mid- May on the coastal plain, in particular Charles. Bob, you say in the 2002 MD Birdlife that peak migration is April 7 for Hermit Thrush. Also, of all the May counts for Charles that I was able to find, none had Hermit Thrush. Swainson's, Veery, Wood, and maybe Gray-cheeked/Bicknell are reasonable possibilities, and the first three have been reported. I don't have a record Hermit Thrush that late in Charles, but don't want to dismiss the report based on my history. Since you may have a better idea of the distribution across the state in Mid-May, how likely is the report?
Thanks
George
P.S. I had two Sedge Wrens on territory August 2 at Blossom Point, a restricted military facility. This elevates these animals to "T" for that atlas block. I will check in three weeks to see if there is any evidence of nesting confirmation. |
