Several years ago, Diane and I bought a suet feeder from the Backyard Naturalist. It's constructed such that a bird must hang upside down on the wire mesh in order to reach the prized suet. We've found that, as advertised, this construction makes is very difficult for "weak footed" birds, i.e. Starlings and House Sparrows, to feed, even for short intervals.

This feeder allows us to ration out our peanut suet to the woodpeckers, wrens, nuthatches, and such we prefer to feed. The less desired birds are reduced to feeding on the scraps dropped by the others -- slim pickings, indeed.

Our Pileated is larger than the feeder, but he/she manages swimmingly.
