Yesterday's May Count seemed to be very birdy all around though there were not many migrants. Rain in mid morning did not interfere significantly.
My highlights for the day were the late migrants I saw: two Pied-billed Grebes and a DC Cormorant at the Westminster Reservoir, a Solitary Sandpiper on a farm pond, a Spotted Sandpiper on the Monocacy River, one Least Flycatcher heard singing, small flocks of Cedar Waxwings, a Magnolia Warbler, three Black-throated Blues, three Myrtle Warblers, several Redstarts, a Northern Waterthrush heard, a female Canada Warbler, and about 35 Bobolinks on Deer Park Road. Also of note were the sparrows in the grasslands: 18 Field, 9 Vesper, 6 Savannah, and 18 Grasshopper with 19 Meadowlarks. Other Bobolinks were at breeding sites and four Red-headed Woodpeckers were also enjoyable.
The best bird of the count that I heard of at the tally was a Pectoral Sandpiper found by the Harveys. This is a county departure record by about three and half weeks and very rare here in spring when we have little shorebird habitat.
This morning I visited Piney Run Park which was uncovered for the count. There were large numbers of swallows flying around the lake including all species but Purple Martin. The only non-resident waterfowl was a female Bufflehead.
