Today, in the early afternoon, Hal Wierenga found a Brown-headed Nuthatch at Fort Smallwood Park.  It was seen soon afterwards by Sue Ricciardi, Matt Grey, and Dan Stewart.  If approved by the Maryland Records Committee, it would be the first record for Anne Arundel County.  Directions to the Park can be found on the MOS Website; choose Birding Sites, Maryland, Hawks. (There is a $5 entrance fee unless you have a county annual pass or senior pass; Park is closed on Wednesdays.)  On the one-way road around the park, turn left at the stop sign and go past the white Fort.  The nuthatch was seen not far from the roadside between the "Park Closes at 8:30" sign and the next bend in the road (near the white building).  However, there are lots of pines in the Park for it to forage in.  By the way, at least one Red-headed Woodpecker is still being seen.
