The DC Audubon Society today made its annual trip to Ocean City, MD, and
the Delaware coast. Twelve members made the trip from DC.
At the Ocean City inlet in the morning there were hundreds of NORTHERN
GANNETS in addition to all three Scoters, several LONG-TAILED DUCKS,
Common and Red-throated Loons, Ruddy Turnstones, Sanderling, American
Black Ducks, and Red-breasted Mergansers.
By the time we reached the Indian River Inlet in Delaware
(extralimital), it was snowing hard enough to make viewing difficult.
Despite these problems, we were able to locate two RAZORBILLS and one
HARLEQUIN DUCK that had been reported over the last few weeks. In
addition, there were more fly-by NORTHERN GANNETS, Black and Surf
Scoters, LONG-TAILED DUCKS, Ruddy Turnstones, Purple Sandpipers, and
Boat-tailed Grackles. The usual Great Cormorants were sitting on the
tower at the end of the jetty.
Silver Lake held about 500 each of Canvasbacks and Ruddy Ducks. In the
midst of that group there were two REDHEADS and one Northern Shoveler. A
NORTHERN GANNET and later a Bald Eagle passed overhead as we scanned
through the ducks. A stop at Cape Henlopen was not very productive.
Along Route 404 in Delaware, one especially large flock of Snow Geese
(about 1000 individuals) held several blue morph geese.
Good birding,
