It doesn't surprise me at all that a raccoon is able to steal suet from a wire suet
feeder. This past summer we had a "gang" of them (a mother and two teenagers,
apparently) that were remarkably adept at getting the tightly-fitting lid off a small
galvanized can in which I was keeping birdseed.
I use the wire chain on the top of my suet feeder to hook it around the top of the
pole from which I have three tube feeders hanging. That way, it is above the
squirrel baffle. I've never had any problems with nonavian suet thieves.
