I had a little time this morning to squeeze in some birding before heading
out of a town, and decided to hit the east side of the city instead of Rock
Creek. Lots of bird activity, though diversity (esp. warblers) was on the
low side. Here are the highlights:
1 (poss. 2) YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON at Kenilworth Aquatic Garden (KAG) -
my first for this park
3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS - flew overhead at Kenilworth Park (KP)
1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER - flew overhead at Kenilworth Park
3 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS - KAG
3 LEAST SANDPIPERS - KAG
2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS - singing at KP (the first was opposite the first
parking area and the second was near the trail that goes down to the KAG
marsh
1 DICKCISSEL - a female was in with a flock of c.25 BOBOLINKS at KP. The
birds were on the back side of the grass (in small trees and the tall trees
that divide KP from KAG), about 50 yards from the trail that goes down to
the KAG marsh (towards the back of the park)
Other than that, there were lots of YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS, a BLUE GROSBEAK,
tons of ORCHARD ORIOLES, 2 lingering SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and c.3 WARBLING
VIREOS. Warbler-wise (besides the chats) there were YELLOW-RUMPEDS,
BLACKPOLLS, YELLOW, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, YELLOWTHROAT, and NO. PARULA.
Good birding,
