The Baltimore Bird Club field trip to Patuxent North Tract today
seemed pretty slow compared to typical visits at this time of year.
There were no masses of migrant warblers, and birds not easy to see
due to the wind.
Nevertheless, we did see or hear most of the expected residents such
as Summer and Scarlet Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting,
Bluebird, Prairie Warbler (lots), one Yellow-breasted Chat, Hooded and
Kentucky Warbler heard only, and both Orioles.
We got good looks at Black-throated Green Warbler and Chestnut-sided
Warbler at the entrance to the riverside trail by the visitor center.
We had 14 species of warbler in the refuge. (3 more at the Nursery
Road Park'n'Ride, including Blackpoll.) We missed Prothonotary Warbler
because the prime area beyond New Marsh is closed due to bridge
reconstruction. We did not find any cuckoos. The seen Summer Tanagers
and a heard-only Chat were at the usual area on the road to New Marsh
by the power lines.
We heard some Summer Tanagers having a song battle on the road to
Lake Allen. The songs were a little hoarse for Summer Tanagers but the
tune was right. Pete Webb speculated that they might really be Scarlet
Tanagers with a Summer Tanager accents because there seemed to be an
occasional "chip-burr" blended in with the song. It took 10 minutes to
find one of them, and, it was indeed a Scarlet Tanager.
Lake Allen is now open. There was not much there, but in the wetland
across the road from the lake we saw Solitary and Spotted Sandpiper
and Green Heron.
We had 72 species in the refuge. 12 people joined the trip. Leader:
Steve Sanford.
