Took an evening trip to Hughes Hollow to try for the rails. Success! The Virginia Rail was in the spot where others have reported it, and gave me some nice looks once I finally found it--nice way to get a life rail. It was about 60-70' down the right-hand dike, on the left (south) side--on the near side of the water. If the Sora was still around, I didn't see or hear it.
Met Dave Powell there--he saw the rail, and did me the favor of pointing out the American Bittern call (we had seen the bird fly by a while before and he had thought it was a bittern). He also had Yellow-crowned Night Herons and Rusty Blackbirds, birds I missed.
Other birds of interest that I did get:
Green Heron (at least 4)
American Bittern (seen in flight, then heard calling several times)
Eastern Kingbird
Yellow Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Jason Waanders
