Hi MD Osprey:

Each year, the Tim Schantz Scholarship fund provides an expense-paid trip
for a college age student to the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival in Alaska.
I have pasted the announcement about this year's trip at the bottom of this
message, preceded by a short message from Tim's twin brother Mike.

Tim was an excellent birding leader and a good friend of ours who died of a
massive heart attack at age 37 in 2003 in the Nome airport on his way to
Gambell. We had just spent the previous week in the Pribiloffs with Tim and
we were already in Gambell with another group when he died.

This scholarship program trip is an excellent opportunity for a student,
and we would love to see a local student win it one year.

I can send anyone who requests it a copy of the announcement in flier form,
with artwork, suitable for posting. Just let me know if you would like a copy.

Thanks.

Phil

Birding Scholarship Trip Opportunity

The Tim Schantz Memorial Foundation will send a college age scholarship
recipient to the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival in Homer, Alaska May 5-8,
2005 to help in the student's study of migrating shorebirds. The Kachemak
Bay Area, a magnificent setting, is renowned for the diversity and numbers
of shorebird species that pass through each spring.

Tim Schantz, recognized for his dedication and expertise in field bird
identification died suddenly of a heart ailment May 27, 2001 at the age of
36 while guiding an birding tour to Gambell, Alaska. The Tim Schantz
Foundation has been established to insure that Tim's passion for birds live
on in other young aspiring students.

The scholarship trip will include the following:
" Roundtrip airfare to Anchorage, Alaska
" Transportation from Anchorage to Homer, Alaska
" Four nights lodging for the festival
" A copy of the new ABA Alaska finding guide

Part of this experience will involve being on the program for the shorebird
festival and doing an original ornithological presentation as well as
serving as an interpretive guide for the public. For more information on
the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival go to homeralaska.org/shorebird.
