See Life Paulagics had a successful trip today. The day was beautiful, winds
light, and the seas about 1'-2'. We had a comfortable ride the whole day. We
initially ran southeast to an area called The Hambone, which is where many
private boats were fishing for tuna. From there, we headed out to the
Baltimore Canyon, out to deep water (over 500 fathoms), and then back in.
The highlight was undoubtedly a killer WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL seen by
everybody. Mike picked the bird up on our way back and we were able to follow
it for about 5 minutes. Ed Sigda got some nice shots, and they will be posted
on our web site later.
Another good bird as a very cooperative BRIDLED TERN, found in typical Bridled
Tern habitat; sitting on a floating board.
The totals for the day are:
18 Cory's Shearwater
4 Audubon's Shearwater
729 Wilson's Storm-Petrel
1 White-faced Storm-Petrel
6 Red-necked Phalarope
4 "commic" tern (Common / Arctic type tern)
1 Black Tern
1 Bridled Tern
2 Whimbrel
3 Fin Whale
255 Common Dolphin
105 Bottlenose Dolphin
24 Lagerhead Sea Turtle
Our next trip is on October 23, a good time to look for jaegers, Red Phalarope,
shearwaters, etc. We hope you can join us.
