I got back to Patuxent North Tract this afternoon, about 3 p.m. I was
mistaken yesterday regarding the immature Snowy Egrets. They were, in
fact, immature Little Blue Herons. The number had grown to 4 today, all
with dark wing tips, well-concealed, except when viewing through scope.
The adult Snow Egret, however, was still present, a definitely a Snowy.
The Little Blues still looked like they had yellowish legs, and yellow in
the bill. But the bill appeared to be somewhat thicker than the Snowy, and
the upper bill appeared a bit more decurved. They also appeared to be
marginally larger than the Snowy.
Only three Great Egrets were present, and flew off. Numbers of Great Blues
had climed to 3. Most of the Great Egrets and all of the Great BLues were
perched in trees far beyond Merganser Pond. No Spotted Sandpipers today,
just Solitaries. The Greater Yellowlegs was still present, as were several
Green Herons and Killdeer.
