Merlin, Kestrel, and Red-tailed Hawk in downtown DC
An immature Red-tailed Hawk has been hanging around the downtown area
just north of the White House in Washington, D.C. I've seen it at
various times during the day Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week
soaring over the buildings chasing flocks of Rock Doves and Starlings or
fending off attacking Crows.
Also, yesterday and today, a Kestrel perched for short periods on an
aerial on the AFL-CIO building at 16th Street and I Street, N.W.
Yesterday, the Kestrel joined the Crows in diving at the Hawk before the
Crows chased them both away. Today, a Merlin perched on that aerial for
a short period.
