We are still waiting for many areas to report, but preliminary highlights for
the count, held Saturday the 18th in fine weather, include Oldsquaw, N.
Pintails, Canvasbacks, (all "good" waterfowl for this count), 2 Long-eared
Owls, 3 N. Saw-whet Owls + 1 that was found still warm but dead on Bowie Mill
Rd. in Olney, Am. Pipits and Horned Larks, a Lincoln's Sparrow, American
Woodcock, plus a number of Chipping Sparrows and Am. Tree Sparrows, a couple
of Purple Finches, and record numbers of E. Bluebirds. The bird that seemed
to cause the most "stir" at the tally, was, however, a possible E. Collared
Dove. The details are not too good, but hopefully someone (or myself) can
relocate this bird and get better looks through a scope. I may try and
squeeze in some time on Wednesday morning to give a look. Anyone interested
leave me an e-mail at Warblerick@aol.com. The bird was seen just SW of the
"landfill pond" at Rt. 108 west of Olney.
Hope the Seneca and D.C. counts went well.
