Dotty Mumford and I went to Frederick county today. No luck on the
loggerhead shrike, nor on such things as snow buntings, larks, etc. But
not for lack of trying.
Lily Pons:
Great blue herons 6, maybe more
Canda goose 50+
Mallard
Hooded merganser, 2 females
Turkey vulture,1
Red-shouldered hawk 1
Red tailed hawk 1 (RTHA)
Killdeer, 2
Common snipe, 1
Herring gull , 1
American crow , flock mobbing RTHA, maybe 20 of them
Red bellied woodpecker, 1
Downy woodpecker,1
Carolina chickadee,1
Carolina wren,2
WINTER WREN, 1
Northern mockingbird,2
Northern cardinal,4 two males, two females
Song sparrow, lots
Swamp sparrow , 4+
White throated sparrow, lots
American goldfinch, 1, female
On other back roads in the area, in addition to species noted above:
American kestral, 2
Black vulture, 2 (over Point of Rocks)
Rock doves, couple good sized flocks
Mourning dove,1
Starlings
Tufted titmouse,1
Dark-eyed junco,2
WHITE CROWNED SPARROW, 4 possibly more on New Design Rd, near water
treatment plant,
also 1 on another road
Not terribly "birdy", but a very pleasant day. I recently returned from
Hawaii and it was great to be out.
