I failed to find the White Pelican on my Monday morning (0750 to 0820)
during my ride to work, despite checking from Belle Haven north to the
powerplant. Nor did it seem to be present anywhere between the N end
of Alexandria and Belle Haven marina Monday evening between 1920 and
2000. (Though I did enjoy the colorful sunset clouds; and the egret
flock gathering on the Potomac side of Hunting Towers included 3 Snowy
and a single immature Little Blue Heron.) And again this morning
(0715 to 0750), I had no luck.
Because I had not failed to find the bird on any attempt (morning and
evening bike commutes each weekday, one or more sightings each Sat and
Sunday) since the evening of 17 Aug, I suspect the pelican moved on
early Monday morning. (It was present off the mouth of Hunting Creek
at least to 2000 on Sunday, 29 Aug.)
Cheers and good birding,
