I do hope you will take the trip out to Machias Seal Island. Dennis would
enjoy it! Puffins and maybe whales, and seals too. There's even a
lighthouse you can climb up. Not to mention razorbills, murres, guillemots
and eiders!
I have a book on birding in Maine to send you. Briefly, in the Bath area,
check out Merrymeeting Bay and Bath Club, Popham Beach State Park especially
and Morse Mountain Reserve.
I went to see the phalarope yesterday, and, meeting Marty Cribb there,
decided on the spur to go to Smith Island. Highlights were 4 yellow-crowned
night-herons, 4 saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrows, 5 or 6 seaside sparrows,
more than a dozen little blue herons, one northern harrier and one gray
catbird ( county bird for me). Oh, and 2 brown pelicans and 2 Am.
oystercatchers. The clapper rails abundantly clicked and kicked but did not
show themselves to me.
The red-necked phalarope was swimming in the south inlet of the Pt Lookout
pond at 3:35 friday afternoon, accompanied by killdeer and yellowlegs.
