29 July 1999

Spent about three hours in the Hughes Hollow area. Drove in on River =
Road checking the wires for swallows, looked out over the river at =
Sycamore Landing, and made a big loop from the impoundments west through =
the forest of dead trees to Horsepen Branch and Sycamore Landing Road =
and back through the fields to the impoundments.
Breeding activity is diminishing but did hear singing acadians, =
house wrens, yellowthroats, field sparrows, cardinals, and indigo =
buntings. Insect calling is more common now . This is also the time of =
year when spider webs are everywhere.
      Birds Seen:
Great Blue Heron-2, Great Egret-3, Green Heron-4, Turkey Vulture-1, =
Canada Goose-47, Wood Duck-10 (six of these were large young with no =
adults in sight), Red-shouldered Hawk-2, Mourning Dove-6, Downy =
Woodpecker-3, Eastern Wood-Pewee-4. Acadian Flycatcher-3, Eastern =
Phoebe-1, White-eyed Vireo-2, Red-eyed Vireo-1(with fledgling cowbird), =
American Crow-1, Rough-winged Swallow-57 (down from a high count of 229 =
last saturday), Barn Swallow-2, Carolina Chickadee-7, Tufted Titmouse-4, =
White-breasted Nuthatch-1,Carolina Wren-6, House Wren-7, Blue-gray =
Gnatcatcher-5, Common Yellowthroat-6, Field Sparrow-2, Cardinal-9, =
Indigo Bunting-8, Red-winged Blackbird-1, Common Grackle-6, American =
Goldfinch-9 and a possible Blue Grosbeak at the intersection of River =
and Hughes Road. Last Friday I had 3 of them about 50 yds east of =
Sycamore Landing Road and River Road.
