The Gray-cheeked/Bicknell's Thrush was feeding on the trail about 1
mile below the dam. We watched it for about 10 minutes at a distance of
about 40 yards, using a scope at 20-45X. It was clearly a Gray-cheeked
type, but appeared somewhat small, had extensive yellow on the lower
mandible, covering at least the basal half, and there was a slight contrast
between the tail and the back, with the tail slightly browner and warmer.
IF Bicknell's can be reliably separated from Gray-cheeked by plumage (and
it is not certain that it can), then this bird showed the characteristics
associated with Bicknell's. Recently there has been a wave of revisionism
on the subject of identification by plumage and it is now thought that many
of the characters show overlap.
