Folks,

Todd Day and I did a Big Day for the No. Virginia Birdathon.  The following 
is a quick post on the most results; details will soon follow.

The total for May 9, 1999 is 137 species.   We started at 0300 and ended at 
2000.  Most surprising birds:  Pied-billed Grebe and Horned Grebe at Dyke 
Marsh, Glossy Ibis at Huntley, female Hooded Merganser and 2 chicks in 
Belmont Bay off the new Occaquan refuge, Black-bellied Plovers at Dulles 
Wetlands, and Gray-cheeked/Bicknell's sp. at Monticello Park.  We were also 
surprised by the numbers of late migrants, such as Blackpolls which could be 
found in every city block and another difficult to find late migrant, 
Wilson's Warbler, which wass at both Dyke (am) and Huntley (pm, sunset).  
Best bird to find was Whip-poor-will at Manasas Battlefield near the Bull Run 
River.  Second most common warbler may be Black-throated Blue today.  Worst 
miss was E. Screech Owl.  And too bad but the Va. Rail at Huntley appears to 
be gone.
