Gail, I led the ANS trip to Myrtle Grove this past Sunday. There is normally an active RHWO colony there. I saw one bird in a different site, but did not find ANY in the usual site. It was an extremely quite morning - no calls of anything to speak of, so I imagine the woodpeckers were around, but not active. Another thing was that I went in reverse compared to my normal direction, bringing us the the colony site later in the morning, which I thought might be better, since we often encounter the birds throughout the day. The one I saw was at about the time we normally got to the colony site, so maybe the colony was active, but only early on??? This is usually a reliable area - I'd say about 90% or better, but of course we are talking about this year, not past history. I still think it's the most reliable site I know of. I don't know if Black Hills still is reliable. Dave Czaplak might know about that. If I can help any further, please let me know. Best wishes, Tony Futcher tfutcher@cuc.edu P.S.
