My favorite Warbler Spots ... I kind of like North Branch to Spring Gap
on the Potomac River in Allegany County though just about anyplace on the C&O
canal can be good. One of my fondest memories is birding at Seneca in early
May. I was overwhelmed by the numbers of warblers (and variety too) that I saw
there that spring morning. I was just learning the birds then (not that I have
stopped learning). Some of the warblers were way up in those enormous
Sycamores, but the singing was so intense and there were just so many birds.
I have only done Monticello Park in VA a few times, but I would agree
with Todd Day, that it is a good spot. The birds come right down to a tiny
stream that runs through the park to bathe. That MD/DC area birdfinding book of
Claudia Wilds' described the whole phenomenon pretty well. This is one of the
few places that I ever managed to get decent warbler photos.
