Thanks to Jane Kostenko and all the other "regulars" who were extremely helpful to those of us who travelled to see the Kelp Gull on Saturday, 3/6/99. It was on the pilings behind the Seabreeze as we arrived in the rain. Jane and the others, who I learned included Tyler Bell and Patty Craig, were huddled under the back overhang of the restaurant trying to keep relatively dry. They pointed the gull out, helped with identification, passed out literature and gave us directions to Point Lookout. After lunch, which included the last of the wonderful Cream of Crab soup until the owner returns (I'm told), we took some pictures and video in "sunny" conditions and bade farewell to our hosts and the gull to explore Point Lookout State Park. We saw White-winged and Surf Scoter, two Bald Eagles, Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, Common Loon, Eastern Bluebird, American Kestrel, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red-winged Blackbird and Northern Cardinal. The trip was fruitful, the weather became decent and Jane and the other Southern Maryland birders proved worthy of nomination for "rarity hosts" of the year. Thanks again, Jack, Janet & Daniel Powers powersalex@aol.com Alexandria, Virginia, USA
