Hi Dave,
For the past two years I've gone to the Festival of the Cranes at the
Bosque.
I highly recommend the Super 8 Motel in Socorro. It takes about 20
minutes to get to the refuge from here.
Rates are quite reasonable and I joined the Super 8 VIP club via the
internet for $3 and this saves several dollars each day. They include
coffee/toast/english muffin breakfast. I prefer a non-smoking room and
there seem to be quite a few of these at the motel.
The K-Bob's Restaurant next store provides reasonable dinners/lunches
and has a salad bar when a need to graze sets in.
If you like Mex food, try Frank & Lupe's El Sombrero. It very tasty and
low-priced. My husband & I get at least a couple meals in there.
For coffee, try Martha's Black Dog on Manzanares Ave. The New Mexico
Pinon Nut coffee is excellent and I brought back a pound.
The Owl Café near the refuge has a tasty Green Chile Cheeseburger when
you're in a carnivorous mood.
If you get the opportunity, and have an interest, I recommend you visit
the VLA about 50 minutes west of Socorro.
This is where they filmed the Jodie Foster film - Contact.
Have a great trip,
Stella Aquilina
