On Saturday, January 2nd, my wife and I went to the Mall to see the Northern Goshawk that's been hanging around. It was a good day for raptors: 2 Red-tailed Hawks flying around the Commerce building 1 American Kestrel, male, perched on the Commerce Dept. building 1 Cooper's Hawk, perched on the main Justice Dept. building 1 Northern Goshawk, imm. perched on the National History building, then flying towards the Smithsonian Castle/Freer Gallery - closest look of this bird we've ever had. At Haines Point: 2 Red Fox on the golf course 5, count 'em, 5 Merlin perched on trees at the golf course many Ring-billed, Greater Black-backed and Herring Gulls (didn't pick through them for rarities - extremely cold/windy.) 1 female Bufflehead Lou Shomette Columbia, MD
