     Top birds this week are: CINNAMON TEAL in MD and VA;
AMERICAN BITTERN and SELASPHORUS hummingbird in DC; and GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED and ROSS' GEESE in VA.

Other birds of interest include: PIED-BILLED GREBE, TUNDRA
SWAN and other waterfowl, COMMON SNIPE, GOLDEN EAGLE, hawks,
WINTER WREN, and FOX SPARROW.

The SELASPHORUS hummingbird reported last week from a yard
on Sherrier Pl, NW DC, was seen again on Nov 21, by several
observers. They identified it as an immature male RUFOUS or
ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD.

Also in the District this week was an AMERICAN BITTERN,
spotted at Kenilworth Aquatic Garden, NE, on Nov 22.

CINNAMON TEAL were seen in the same MD and VA locations as
last week. The pair reported from Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD
[DeLorme 49, A-B6], during the last two weeks was spotted again
on Nov 19. To look for these birds, follow MD Rt 445 into the
refuge, then pull off immediately, at the base of the bridge.
This time, the birds were on the west side of the bridge, near
the boat rental and dock area, and, as last week, were not
associating with other ducks. From Fairfax Co, VA, came reports
again of a male CINNAMON TEAL at both Mason Neck NWR and Accotink
Bay Wildlife Refuge. These reports, all over the weekend, were
not simultaneous; thus, it is still possible that the birds are
one and the same. On Nov 21, at Mason Neck, the sighting was
almost continuous, from 7:30 am until 9:15 am, in the marsh at
the end of the Great Marsh Trail. The bird was accompanied by
two male Blue-winged Teal and a female Blue-winged or Cinnamon
Teal. At Accotink Bay the same day, the sighting was a little
later, from 10:30 am to 12:15 pm. The following day, a lone male
CINNAMON TEAL was seen flying into the marsh at Mason Neck,
between 9 and 10 am.

Six adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen in flocks of
Snow and Canada Geese at Flowerdew Hundred, on the James River,
southeast of Richmond, Prince George Co, VA [DeLorme 49, B5], on
Nov 21. A single, adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was also
spotted in a flock of Canada Geese at the Northampton Co, VA
[DeLorme 51, B5], landfill on Nov 23. The bird subsequently flew
off towards the marsh at Oyster. To reach the landfill from US
Rt 13 heading south, go through Cheriton and then take Rt 639
towards Oyster. After passing Rt 600 S on your right, go about
1/4 mile and turn left on Rt 600 N. Go about a mile. The
landfill will be on your right, and the pond immediately on your
left.

The ROSS' GOOSE reported last week from Stuart's Pond,
Rosedale, Russell Co, VA, was spotted again on Nov 20. SNOW
GOOSE numbers at Bombay Hook NWR, DE, were estimated at more than
30,000 birds the evening of Nov 18. A single SNOW GOOSE was
reported farther inland than usual, just north of Bristol,
Washington Co, VA, on Nov 19.

Reports of other waterfowl came from many locations. On Nov
19, large rafts of RUDDY DUCKs and BUFFLEHEADs on Belmont Bay,
Mason Neck NWR, Fairfax Co, VA, held several COMMON GOLDENEYEs.
On Nov 22, the rafts there were estimated to contain 3,000-5,000
RUDDY DUCKs, 500 RING-NECKED DUCKs, and about 50 scaup. Two
female COMMON GOLDENEYEs were seen at Perryville Community Pk,
Cecil Co, MD, on Nov 20. This spot is on MD Rt 7, between the
towns of North East and Perryville. Zion Pond, Sunshine,
Montgomery Co, MD, was hosting eight species of waterfowl,
including AMERICAN WIGEON, LESSER SCAUP, RUDDY DUCK, GADWALL,
BUFFLEHEAD, and HOODED MERGANSER, on Nov 21. The same day, ducks
at Accotink Bay, VA, included GREEN-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN
SHOVELER, WOOD DUCK, and HOODED MERGANSER. Other HOODED
MERGANSER reports included a pair of birds at Roaches Run,
Arlington, VA, on Nov 18, and three birds, two males and a
female, there on Nov 22. TUNDRA SWANs were reported from several
locations during the week. And Little Seneca Lake, at Black Hill
Reg Pk, Montgomery Co, MD, held 100 BUFFLEHEADs and more than 30
RING-NECKED DUCKs, on Nov 22. Up to a dozen PIED-BILLED GREBEs
were seen there the same day.

A GOLDEN EAGLE flew over Snicker's Gap Hawkwatch, on the
Loudoun/Clarke Co line, VA, on Nov 18, and two more GOLDEN EAGLEs
were noted there on Nov 22. Other raptor reports included a
MERLIN on Montgomery St, near the railroad tracks, Silver Spring,
Montgomery Co, MD, on Nov 20. A PEREGRINE FALCON and a COOPER'S
HAWK were spotted over 13th St, NW DC, on Nov 23. On Nov 19, a
sixth-floor office window in Bethesda, Montgomery Co, MD,
afforded a view of a PEREGRINE FALCON perched atop a nearby
office building and then stirring up other birds as it flew off.
TAILED HAWK were spotted on Nov 23, and a RED-TAILED HAWK the
following day. RED-TAILED HAWKs in some numbers were tallied at
Snicker's Gap Hawkwatch, VA, with a high count of 85 individuals
on Nov 22. A late OSPREY was noted at Roaches Run, VA, the same
day.

WINTER WREN reports included 13 birds, some of them singing
near dusk, at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD, on Nov 22.
Sixteen COMMON SNIPE were noted there the same day.

FOX SPARROWs were reported from a number of locations. The
high count was seven birds at Hughes Hollow, MD, on Nov 22.
