A couple of late afternoon hours in Carroll County produced the following
on Oct. 31:
At Hashawha - 2 Fox Sparrows, my first of the season
At the sediment pond on Magna Way, Westminster - 1 female Shoveler, also
the first of the season.
At Westminster Reservoir - 1 Double-crested Cormorant, 1300 Canada Geese
(including 1 with an all grayish white mantle), 1 Tundra Goose (as AOU
seems intent on calling collectively the small races of Canadas), 1
male Wood Duck, 1 female Gadwall, 15 Black Ducks, 25 Mallards, 4
Green-winged Teal, 1 female Lesser Scaup, 4 male Hooded Mergansers, 3
Ruddy Ducks, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 29 Killdeer, 1 Snipe, 5 Ring-billed
Gulls, and 2 Herring Gulls, the latter also my first of the season.
Late Butterflies - At home 1 Cabbage and 1 Sachem. At Pine Valley Park,
Manchester 1 Cabbage, 1 white sulfur, and 1 Variegated Fritillary; also 1
Gray Fox mousing in the meadow (or is it voling?). At Hashawha - 1
Eastern Tailed Blue and 1 unidentified sulfur.
