Virginia Rail at the Smithsonian Institution

On October 1 and 2 (last Thursday and Wednesday), I saw the rail
at a small muddy (marshy?) spot inside the Enid Haupt Garden.
Specifically, I saw it where the fence along Independence Ave.
joins the A&I Museum (the brick building east of the Castle).
For the first time in over a month, it was quite comfortable out
in the open and didn't scurry into cover when I stopped to look
at it.
   It seemed to have molted into its basic plumage, and was
looking quite sharp!  I looked for it today, but did not see it
