Although I often go birding in the Wakefield-Accotink corridor
after recycling stuff at Wakefield, I followed Mike Collins
instructions today, with good results. Arriving at 8 am, I
went down the west edge of the powerline cut to the point
where the trail veers east and crosses an intermittent stream.
I was rewarded with clear sightings of Northern Parula, Common
Yellowthroat, and Connecticut Warblers. I got a glimpse of
another warbler, possibly Chestnut-sided. Also in the area
were two White-eyed Vireos, engaged in a singing contest!
Birds seen nearby included Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, numerous
Goldfinches, a moulting Mockingbird, and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.
After exploring trails to the north of that spot with little
success, I returned at 10:30, finding only catbirds. Guess
you have to be at the right place and time!
