Yes, Lake Churchill! =20
It's that small lake in Germantown between Father Hurley Blvd. and =
Little Seneca Lake (Black Hill Regional Park).
On a lunchtime health walk around the lake, in the swampy area at the =
south end, (nearest Papa H. Blvd.) in addition to 2 Spotted Sandpipers =
and a Killdeer, I encountered a Great Blue Heron, Green Heron and an =
immature Night-Heron. At the time I thought it was a Yellow-Crowned, =
but after checking the books, it may be a Black-Crowned. (Hey, I was =
getting exercise so I didn't carry my Peterson's, and I don't have all =
the juvenals sorted out yet.<g> I'll have to go back again armed with =
reference materials!) On the water in addition to Canadas, Mallards, =
Black Ducks, Woodies and DC Cormorants, were a pair of Pied-billed =
Grebes -- the first I've seen this season.=20
Then some A......hem, Jerk, fired a gun and his dog splashed into the =
water after a stick or something. Is it legal to train dogs and shoot =
firearms in community lakes? Can't be, but who's going to yell at a guy =
with a gun and an unleashed dog? Well, that was the end of the =
waterfowl.....
So I went over to the paved paths in Black Hill. The resident =
Red-headed Woodpeckers were doing their thing as usual in the snags on =
the far side, but otherwise it was pretty quiet. (Of course it was =
during lunch/birdy nap-time so that's not surprising.)
Happy Birding!
