Permits to bird the islands on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel can be obtained by writing to The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District, 323896 Lankford Highway, Cape Charles, VA 23310-0111. Better still, you can obtain the permit by calling 757/331-2960. You can have it mailed to you, or you can simply tell them what day you want to pick it up and at which end (North, Cape Charles or South, Virginia Beach). Stop at the offices by the toll booths and it will be waiting for you. In addition to the sites you have mentioned I would recommend the town of Oyster, Northampton County and its dump (sanitary landfill) which is located just north of Oyster on Rt 600. Rt 600 is a pleasant alternative to Rt 13 and can produce some good birds. Both the Eastern Shore Refuge and Kiptopeke State Park are basically adjacent to Rt. 13 at the end of the peninsula. They are both signposted.
