Subject: Black Terns in DC
Yesterday (Sunday, 8/16) afternoon, I saw a number of Black Terns
in DC.
One was at the mouth of 4-mile Run, and 10 others were working the
large
patch of hydrilla off of Alexandria (viewing was from the end of
Oronoco
St. in Alex.).
I could see the 4-maile Run bird well, and it was clearly a juvenile -
brown back with dark gray upper wings, rump and tail; heavily
marked with
dark gray on the sides of the upper breast and down the flanks. The
others looked the same, though they were too distant to be sure they
weren't basic plumaged adults (saw nothing approaching an alternate
plumaged bird).
