I wanted to thank folks who posted updates from yesterday on the Pacific Loon -- I managed to see it very well this am, probably at about the same as Steve. There was also a summer plumaged Common and a distant winter- plumaged Common Loon present. The Loon was first across the Channel from us, near Ft. McNair, but swam over to the Hains Point side due perhaps in part to water activity associated with the arrival of the USCG bark Eagle (very impressive, even "perched"). At its closest, the Loon was about 6' away! The black throat appeared a bit purplish but the light was bad (afternoon is better). Naturally I neglected to bring my camera. If it sticks around, will have to try for another photo-op!. Gail Mackiernan gail@umdd.umd.edu
