Joe,

A lot of your questions would be answered for you by materials 
available from the American Birding Association.  If you're not yet a 
member, I highly recommend it--they have an extensive catalog of 
useful publications (more than you might think for Southeastern 
Arizona), checklists, member networks in all segments of the country, 
etc.

The ABA Guide to Southeastern Arizona will answer most, if not all, 
of your questions.
