This a.m., Jan. 11, we arrived at Pine Knob Rd. just before 8 a.m. and briefly saw 4-6 crossbills in silhouette atop the white pines. They soon took off, leaving their identity a mystery. We continued on to Deer Park Rd., where one observer reported flyovers of 1 ww and 1 red earlier. No luck there, though. At about 9:30/9:45, we returned to Pine Knob Rd. to find birders on four white-winged crossbills (one male, three yellows). Had great looks through the scope at birds hanging on the cones. As we left, two driveways west of the pines, on the left side, we saw four or five whitewings, including one male, land in a tall deciduous tree in front of a house. The birds perched there for five minutes before taking off. Then we saw five others, including two males, in the tulip poplar next to this tree. At one point, one of the males picked at the dried tulip poplar "cups." Eventually they flew off toward the pines. Howard Youth Rockville, MD
