On Monday, January 6, at 2:45 I sighted three Sandhill Cranes on the mudflats along the
Patuxent River (Prince George's County), from a vantage point in the Jug Bay Wetlands
Sanctuary. They appear to be two juveniles and one adult. They appear to be wild and do
not have bands. The trio was observed until 5:00 pm. We had excellent views as they fed
by probing in the mud in the midst of a large gull roost. The cranes were seen again on
Tuesday the 6th at 2:15 pm. The cranes were also seen by Jim Stasz, Dotty Mumford, Hal
Weirenga, Lynne Davidson and Judy Burke. The cranes are probably best viewed in the late
afternoon from the Observation Deck adjacent to the Wetlands Center at the Jug Bay
Wetlands Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is open from 9-5 pm. and although we are not generally
open to the public on Thurs and Fri., we are happy to accomodate birders who want to get
a view of the cranes. Call 410-741-9330 for more information. Chris Swarth
