MD Crossbills - 12/26/97

We found a flock of 20 Red Crossbills and at least one brilliant male 
White-winged Crossbill along Pine Knob Road this morning.  Pine Knob 
Road is just east of Rt 32, near Liberty Reservoir in Carrol County.

Crossbills had not been reported from this spot before, but it is near 
the Liberty Reservior and the other locations where crossbills are 
currently being reported.  We just parked along the road and viewed the 
birds from there.

To get to this location, Rt 32 north from Liberty Rd (Rt 26).  Then east 
on Pine Knob Rd until you come to the obvious pine grove with the good 
cone crop.  Note - if you've been to Oakland Mill Rd. the Mineral Rd 
turns into Pine Knob Road.
