I had the pleasure of participating in the 1995 Elkton count as a member
of a team led by Stuyvesant Pell, the son of the founder of the Elkton
Count.  Stuyvesant has been doing the count since he was a little boy,
and, if my memory serves me correctly, he said that his father established
the count sometime around World War II.  The older Mr. Pell, who died some
years ago, was a member of the Delmarva Ornithological Society and had a
residence at Locust Point, south of Elkton, which is how the Elkton Count
came to be sponsored by the DOS.

I think Dave is correct in saying that the two counts are well-rooted and
unlikely to be changed.
