Really makes one want to kick oneself for hurried, incomplete postings and for making assumptions. My posting on Monday was deliberately worded, "Rufous Hummingbird was seen at the Ripley Gardens this morning..." without explaining why. While looking at it, it clearly seemed different, so I didn't want to say "the" SI Rufous (but never bothered to point that out in hurrying to do a post and get on to work). This "January" Rufous H. had far less rufous coloring along its sides than the one I had observed several times at the Ripley in December. It was almost splotchy. The white on its breast and belly, much dirtier. Plus, the 'dots' on its throat were clearly different, and positioned differently (the Dec Rufous had one large, obvious dot in the middle of its throat; this one had several dots, but with one larger one slightly to the right of center). At the time, I focused more on helping a sweet elderly lady with a foreign accent locate the bird than I did on taking notes and making a more careful observation. ...and then there was the cat. One more lesson in how to be a better birder...now, if I could only remember them all.
