Fallon" Subject: 10-Sparrow day and Short-eared Owl in PG MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This morning (Sunday), 8 intrepid birders led by Dave Mozurkewich, undaunted by early heavy fog, birded Milltown Landing WMA on a Patuxent MOS/PG Audubon field trip. They were not disapppointed. A respectable total of 10 sparrows included Song, Swamp, Field, Chipping, White-thr, White-crowned (several), Savannah, Fox, Tree, and Junco. (A Vesper seen on the previous day's scouting was not recovered). The high point of the day was a very rare for PG Co. Short-eared Owl, flushed from the wet fields, perhaps, by hikers - it circled repeatedly, tangled briefly with a Harrier, then perched in a tree, remaining very wide awake while affording excellent scope views. Other highlights of the 52 species day included a Hooded Merg, 2 Bald Eagles, Winter Wren, R.C. Kinglet, 5 Catbirds, 2 Thrashers, and 2 Yellow-throats.
