With around 20 kids in tow it wasn't a birding weekend, and I only had the odd hour or so but I did spot a few species new for me this year: Cattle Egret - single bird feeding on the mainland side of the bridge to Assateague Island, 5/11 Least Tern - as many as 10 fishing at one time off the beach opposite State Park Camping Loop B both days Chuck Will's-Widow - 3 calling in the stretch from the top of the road on the island to Camping Loop B Bobolink - single male feeding on the grass next to the entrance to the State Park, 5/10 I also saw 3 separate Merlin. One of these came in off the sea late afternoon on Saturday. When I first spotted it through the scope its flapping then gliding made me wonder if its wasn't a small dark jaeger but as it got closer it was clear it was a falcon. Seawatching produced both loons, gannets and cormorants, and the odd Black Scoter. Not great variety of warblers, but many Yellow seem to be on territory in the beach scrub, and around 10 Blackpolls on Sunday morning.
