At Lock 38 (across from Shepherdstown, WV), I enjoyed seeing a Baltimore Oriole flitting nicely among the trees at the lock. A nice sight for early in January! Also, seen that day along the canal was a single flyover Ring-billed Gull and a lone Herring Gull, both seen just west of the Frederick/Washington County line along the canal. Also, six woodpecker species (all but Red-headed), Brown Creeper, 2 Wild Turkeys, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks, Northern Harrier, many White-breasted Nuthatches and Golden-crowned Kinglets among the 41 species seen that day.
