It was as Gail said a rather mediocre count, due primarily to the weather of the past 2 weeks and yesterday as well. About 84 species were tallied at the tally-rally last night, with more to come in later, I hope. Best finds were a single SNOW BUNTING mixed in with a flock of blackbirds/cowbirds in Howard County, an OSPREY at Brighton Dam (still present today), which was perhaps new to the count, a Greater White-fronted Goose in Montgomery County, a Long-eared Owl (found by Gail and Barry) in Montgomery County and a single Lincoln's Sparrow which I found at Layhill Park. 2 female Red-breasted Mergansers were found at Brighton Dam as well (with one still there this morning). The Common Goldeneye found on Friday by Hans Holbrook was not seen on count day (nor today). The tally this year was a bit off in attendance, but the food and company were both outstanding. During out tenure as compilers my wife and I tried hard to turn this into a Christmas party for birders, and with Meadowside Nature Center decorated for the holidays, it was really quite festive! Thanks to all who attended our soiree. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. The new compilers, Jay and Diane Jones did an excellent job in getting things prepared and the tally went off without a hitch.
