Tella" Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 14:27:17 -0500 Hello VA Birders: There was a Long-tailed Duck on the Potomac River this morning at = Riverbend Park (Fairfax County, VA)--a beautiful adult male in winter plumage. = When I first saw him around 9:30, about 300 yards upriver from the Visitor = Center, he was settled on a partially submerged tree trunk and was busy = preening. After about a half hour he pushed off and headed downstream, carried by = a fast current. I followed him along the bank and last saw him as he = passed the Visitor Center about 10:15. Unfortunately, since he was floating on Maryland waters, this is not a "Virginia bird." However, if any VA Birders are interested in looking = at an out-of-state Long-tailed Duck, there's a chance he might linger at the down-river end of Riverbend Park, an area where a variety of ducks congregate and feed in the winter and during migration (and where there = was another Long-tailed Duck last November). To look for him, I suggest = parking at the Visitor Center and walking downstream along the path next to the river. About a quarter mile below the Visitor Center is an open area = with good views up and down the river.
