The Peregrine was perched on the first tower of the south span in the sun as we drove over the bridge. We arrived about 8:30 a.m. to a tremendous diurnal movement of birds -- flocks of hundreds of robins and a smaller number of Waxwings were constantly passing overhead, on their way south. They were still going over at 11 a.m. when we left! We estimated several thousand robins passed overhead in two 1/2 hours. A few Bluebirds and a very few Blue Jays were also on the move, as well as (after about 10 a.m.) good numbers of raptors -- we saw three Harriers, 4-5 Cooper's and a couple Sharpies, also about 5 Redtails and a number of Black and Turkey Vultures all moving constantly south. Other species observed included hoards of Myrtle Warblers and one yellow Palm, lots of Ruby-crowns and two Golden-crowns, one Phoebe, and a rather disappointing number of sparrows (although the breeze didn't help), however these included Field, Chipping, White-crowned, White-throat, Song and Swamp, as well as Junco. In the Bay, two Common Loons, a large number of Buffleheads, a couple Long-tailed Duck, a flock of Lesser Scaup and (in the ponds), Mallard, Ruddy, Green-winged Teal and a single Pintail. Still good numbers of Laughing Gulls and a few Forster's Terns around.
