Claire, "Birding By Ear, East" and "More Birding By Ear, East" are excellent places to start in your quest to learn bird sounds. Then, as you begin to feel comfortable with this set, expand your collection with the "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs, East." There are others, too, like the "Peterson Guide to Bird Sounds" and the one from National Geographic. Get these as your pocketbook allows and your skill levels grow. If you really want to test your mettle, get the "Cornell Labs Guide to Warbler Song." It brings tears (of frustration) to my eyes...grin. It helps a LOT if you have a good ear for sounds or music. If not (like me) then the key is repetition, repetition, repetition, as well as time in the field getting comfortable with the sounds of the common species. It will all seem like a total confusion when all of a sudden one day you'll start picking out birds as you drive down the road with the windows open--a most satisfying point at which to arrive. Hope this helps.
