On the Pennsylvania list was an account of Pine Grosbeaks eating new growth of conifers, especially at some Christmas tree farms, as well as eating road salt. This observer thinks it likely that grosbeaks may also forage on dried wild fruits such as grapes, hackberry seeds, poison ivy berries, and sumac. =20 Best,=20 Rob Hilton lower Montgomery County rhilton@csa.com ++++++++ Paul O'Brien posted:=20 Subject: Pine Grosbeaks and Crab Apples From: "Paul O'Brien" Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2001 17:34:01 EST There have been some tantalizing reports of large numbers of Pine Grosbeaks entering northern New York. There is, of course, no assurance that they could come this far south, but there is no harm in being prepared. So those of you who have Crab Apple trees in your yards or lining your streets, or who know of their use as ornamentals in places public or private, keep your eyes open.
