I wasn't going to report on the weekend at Assateague, because nothing of note was found, but since you asked about the (West) Ocean City Pond, thought I would give you a rundown. Joan DeCarli and I found seven species of waders there on Sat., 13 Oct: GREAT BLUE HERON, GREAT EGRET, SNOWY EGRET, LITTLE BLUE HERON, TRICOLORED HERON, CATTLE EGRET, & BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON; and eight species of duck: WOOD DUCK, GADWALL, AM. WIGEON, AM. BLACK DUCK, MALLARD, N. SHOVELER, N. PINTAIL, and GREEN-WINGED TEAL. The only shorebirds there were many LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and there were a couple CASPIAN TERNs. We scanned the beach at Assateague for nearly four hours Sat. afternoon, in which time we saw an estimated 2000 SCOTERs, roughly 1600 Blacks, and 400 Surfs, and not a one White-winged. Also, there were an estimated 50 N. GANNETs, mostly first and second-year birds. The beach also had lingering concentrations of ROYAL & CASPIAN TERNs, while OC Inlet had the only remaining FORSTER'S for the day. The beach also hosted plenty of the four common gulls, as well as two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLs. The shorebird tally, in addition to the yellowlegs above, was: BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER--about 30 in the ORV zone at Fox Hills Level (crossover 10) (Jim Stasz reported an Am. Golden Plover there also, which we didn't see) AM. OYSTERCATCHER--1 on beach; 12 at OC inlet; 5 on Skimmer Is. LESSER YELLOWLEGS--2 at Vaughan North RUDDY TURNSTONE--4 at OC inlet SANDERLING--hundreds on beach LEAST SANDPIPER--5 at Bayside; 3 more at Vaughan North WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER--1 at Fox Hills Level (Jim reported two total) PECTORAL SANDPIPER--2 at Vaughan North Good luck with your birding. Hope this helps.
