Four of them, called the Magothy Bogs, are recent discoveries. The Maryland Dept. of the Environment has been working to preserve the bogs and land around them from encroaching development. In an article from the Sun, June 23rd 2000 (just happen to have it!) some of the bogs are said to be 4000 years old, others could be the remains of ice ponds from the 1800s.
