They appeared in my yard the same time last year. Although I set up a few mist nets last year I wasn't successful in banding any of them. I did notice something odd. I would call them in with my Screech owl imitation as I let the dogs out in the evening. I would continue to whistle to them as I called the dogs back in (I have Bassetts and they are slow to respond so this often took longer than you might expect for dogs). Eventually the owls would respond to me yelling for the dogs even when I didn't try to call the owls. Perhaps this observed response was a form of "imprinting" on dispersing young? I often had a single owl approach within a few feet anytime I spoke outside after dark. It was always a gray morph and I wonsder if it was the same individual.
